Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is certainly not a new concept, but its rise in popularity over recent years, mainly due to the publicity from organisations such as the UFC and Pride, has been unprecedented. In fact, MMA has become so popular, particularly with spectators and thanks to television exposure, that attendance at live events easily surpasses that of traditional boxing.
In very simple terms, MMA combines the most functional elements of the following fighting systems and uses them in a one-on-one competition-based setting. This sometimes takes place in a steel cage, sometimes in a traditional boxing ring:
Muay Thai
Kickboxing
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Greco-Roman Wrestling
Judo
MMA is also renowned for its strength and conditioning programs, which combine the most carefully researched principals of modern exercise with the use of traditional tools and methods such as kettlebells, sled-pulling, calisthenic (bodyweight) exercises, tyre-flipping, sledgehammer training, etc. These are combined in such a way as to ensure the maximum cardiovascular and muscular benefits.
Needless to say, the extensive physical and mental preparation required for MMA competition isn't for everyone and the training is extremely tough, both at a practical and a psychological level. For the vast majority, fighting in a cage may not be a priority but we can all still benefit from many, if not all, of the principals of MMA training and conditioning.
Beyond Fighting’s MMA Combat Conditioning Classes focus on providing a fun and challenging way to increase muscular strength and endurance, and cardiovascular health. They also help with weight-management. The classes are non-contact so ideal for anyone seeking the health and fitness-based benefits of this form of training, without the fear of going home battered and bruised at the end of a class.
The classes combine MMA-specific circuits using some of the training tools mentioned above, as well as offering basic, non-contact focused instruction in the fundamentals of striking, wrestling and submission grappling.
So, if you’re already an experienced martial artist and are keen to significantly improve your conditioning or if you're simply one of those people who wants to get fit and healthy but can’t stand the thought of running on a treadmill and doing dull bicep curls, then come along and give it a try. Details are available in the Class Schedule Section of the website. Your first class is free!!!!!!
